Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu donated blood at the Sha'are Zedek hospital in Jerusalem on Friday, after emergency services pleaded for citizens to give blood following the Meron disaster earlier in the day.

"Like many of citizens of Israel, I came to donate blood, as an act of empathy with the wounded and as an act of empathy of the terrible tragedy that happened here. In these moments our people unite and that is what we are doing at this moment as well," Netanyahu said.

"I have now spoken to [American] President [Joe] Biden, he called me and asked to express his condolences and sorrow over the tragedy that has taken place here. I thanked him on your behalf, citizens of Israel, and also to President Putin, to the PM of India Narendra Modi, to the leaders of Europe, Arab leaders from Bahrain, the Emirates and many other leaders, who share our grief, the grief of the citizens of Israel. In these moments we are together more than ever," he added.

At least 45 people died in a stampede at a religious festival near Mount Meron, in northern Israel, in the early hours of Friday morning, after a structure collapsed at the festival and several people slipped, causing dozens more to fall as a consequence.

We know your deep sorrow, we know your world has been destroyed, we will help you recover in any way we can. I have now spoken to [American] President [Joe] Biden, he called me and asked to express his condolences and sorrow over the tragedy that has taken place here.
